Below is some information that you may find useful about Holly Class learning and expectations for 2025-26.

English

During our Summer term 2026, we will be planning and writing a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, including poetry and biographies. There continues to be a clear focus on sentence structure, punctuation and grammar alongside our daily sounds & syllables lessons.

Maths

Summer term will see children consolidate their use of fractions and decimals. Later in the term they will also calculate money, tell the time and read & interpret data. Year 4s need to continue to use TTRS to practise times tables at home as often as possible.

Science: Light & Sound

Reflecting surfaces

Making shadows

Light and dark

Sun safety

History: Was Queen Victoria a good monarch?

When did she rule?

Who did she marry?

What changed during her reign?

What do sources say about her reign?

Geography: Deserts

What is a desert biome?

Where are deserts located?

What physical features can be found in the desert?

What are the threats to deserts?

Guided Reading

This term we will be reading and exploring ''The boy at the back of the class" by Onjali Q. Rauf . The aim of or guided reading sessions is to focus on following text & reading aloud, using expression in our voices and answer questions about the text.

Reading expectations in Y3/4

Our expectation in KS2 is that all children must read a minimum of 4 times a week. Comments should be recorded in their Reading Record. This will usually be a couple of pages from their school book but please still encourage your child to read a range of reading materials (magazine/comic/e-book etc). Children who meet the expectations will be allowed a special playtime on Friday afternoon. If they do not meet the required standard of reading, they will stay in & read instead. We know there may occasionally be exceptional circumstances some weeks but please do try and help your child to achieve the goal - it would be great if all children had extra play every single week.

Homework expectations in Y3/4

Homework will be set at the beginning of each term and sent out on Class Dojo. This will be a range of English, maths & creative activities. Your child needs to complete two activities (or as many as they like!) by the end of term which will then be celebrated in class. If there are any children who do not complete these tasks, they will be asked to do it in their final celebration time of term.

P.E

P.E is a statutory part of the curriculum and we aim to deliver two hours every week. P.E takes place on a Monday and Thursday. Please make sure correct P.E kit is worn to school on these days. During the summer term, most of Holly Class's Y4 children will be swimming on Thursdays so must bring swimming kit to change into instead.

Multiplication

At the end of Year 4, children take part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Starting from Y3, we deliver daily multiplication practise to help children prepare for this test. Below is a link to a 'mock-up' of the actual test. It would be great to practise this at home as much as often to help your child be 'Times Tables Ready'. Y3's may not know all the multiplication facts yet as we will be learning them throughout the year but any early practise will still be beneficial (and lots of children seem to really enjoy the challenge of beating their previous score as they improve!)
