Holly
Class Teachers: Mr Davies (Tues-Fri) and Mrs Hayward (Mon).
HLTA: Mrs Lawson (she will teach on a Tuesday and Friday afternoon).
Below is some information that you may find useful about Holly Class learning and expectations for 2025-26.
English
In Spring 2026, we will be planning and writing volcano letters and stories. This will include a range of descriptive and persuasive features.
Maths
Spring term will see children multiply and divide two digit numbers. Y3 children will start to use and understand fractions as parts of a whole, whilst Year 4s will calculate using mixed fractions and decimals. Year 4s need to continue to use TTRS to practise times tables at home as often as possible.
Science
Parts of the plant and their functions
Water transportation
Needs of a plant
Seed dispersal
Geography: Where does our food come from?
How is the Earth constructed?
Where are mountains formed?
Why and where do we get volcanoes?
What are the effects of a volcanic eruption?
Guided Reading
This term we will be reading and exploring 'The Fire-Maker's Daughter' by Philip Pullman. The aim of or guided reading sessions is to focus on following text & reading aloud, using expression in our voices and answer questions about the text.
Reading expectations in Y3/4
Our expectation in KS2 is that all children must read a minimum of 4 times a week. Comments should be recorded in their Reading Record. This will usually be a couple of pages from their school book but please still encourage your child to read a range of reading materials (magazine/comic/e-book etc). Children who meet the expectations will be allowed a special playtime on Friday afternoon. If they do not meet the required standard of reading, they will stay in & read instead. We know there may occasionally be exceptional circumstances some weeks but please do try and help your child to achieve the goal - it would be great if all children had extra play every single week.
Homework expectations in Y3/4
Homework will be set at the beginning of each term and sent out on Class Dojo. This will be a range of English, maths & creative activities. Your child needs to complete two activities (or as many as they like!) by the end of term which will then be celebrated in class. If there are any children who do not complete these tasks, they will be asked to do it in their final celebration time of term.
P.E
P.E is a statutory part of the curriculum and we aim to deliver two hours every week. P.E takes place on a Monday and Thursday. Please make sure correct P.E kit is worn to school on these days.
Multiplication
At the end of Year 4, children take part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Starting from Y3, we deliver daily multiplication practise to help children prepare for this test. Below is a link to a 'mock-up' of the actual test. It would be great to practise this at home as much as often to help your child be 'Times Tables Ready'. Y3's may not know all the multiplication facts yet as we will be learning them throughout the year but any early practise will still be beneficial (and lots of children seem to really enjoy the challenge of beating their previous score as they improve!)
