Bellefield CofE Primary & Nursery School

Holly

Class Teachers: Mr Davies (Tues-Fri) and Mrs Hayward (Mon).

Class Teaching Assistant: Mrs Lawson (she will also teach two afternoons a week with Miss Mason as her TA).

Below is some information that you may find useful about Holly Class learning and expectations.

English

We will be exploring the use of rhyming words in limericks and non-fiction structure and language linked to our humanities. In addition, we'll also be continuing our termly narrative focus by consolidating our use of descriptive language, such as similes, metaphors and alliteration.

Maths

Between now and summer, we will continue with fractions as well as exploring time, money, statistics and shapes. We also recite times tables and recap on our previous learning daily. Please continue to use TTRS to practise times tables at home as often as possible.

Science

We will be exploring different states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) and how they may change. We will make predictions and conduct, collate and evaluate experiments related to freezing, melting and boiling.

History: Anglo Saxons: Invaders or Settlers?

Who were the Anglo-Saxons and Scots?

Why and when did they invade?

What does Sutton Hoo tell us about Saxon life?

What did the Saxons change?

Who were the key leaders?

Geography: What are rivers and how are they used?

What is the water cycle?

How are rivers formed?

How are rivers used?

What features does our local river have?

How are rivers and canals different?

Guided Reading

This term we will be reading and exploring 'Tamirind & the Star of Ishta'. The aim of or guided reading sessions is to focus on following text & reading aloud,  using expression in our voices and answer questions about the text.

Reading expectations in Y3/4

Our expectation in KS2 is that all children must read a minimum of 4 times a week. Comments should be recorded in their Reading Record. This will usually be a couple of pages from their school book but please still encourage your child to read a range of reading materials (magazine/comic/e-book etc). Children who meet the expectations will be allowed a special playtime on Friday afternoon. If they do not meet the required standard of reading, they will stay in & read instead. We know there may occasionally be exceptional circumstances some weeks but please do try and help your child to achieve the goal - it would be great if all children had extra play every single week.

Homework expectations in Y3/4

Homework will be set at the beginning of each term and sent out on Class Dojo. This will be a range of English, maths & creative activities. Your child needs to complete two activities (or as many as they like!) by the end of term which will then be celebrated in class. If there are any children who do not complete these tasks, they will be asked to do it in their final celebration time of term.

P.E

P.E is a statutory part of the curriculum and we aim to deliver two hours every week. P.E takes place on a Thursday. Please make sure P.E kit is brought in at the start of term where it may stay until the end of term. Year 4's have swimming this term so please make sure full swimming kit is provided.

Multiplication

At the end of Year 4, children take part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Starting from Y3, we deliver daily multiplication practise to help children prepare for this test. Below is a link to a 'mock-up' of the actual test. It would be great to practise this at home as much as often to help your child be 'Times Tables Ready'. Y3's may not know all the multiplication facts yet as we will be learning them throughout the year but any early practise will still be beneficial (and lots of children seem to really enjoy the challenge of beating their previous score as they improve!)
