We want all children at Bellefield to gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We want to inspire their curiosity to know more about the past and thereby develop their understanding of their place in history. |

Children in the EYFS are learning to understand the world in which they live, starting with their immediate environment and community as well as their own families. Children learn about the historical world around them through stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems. The Reception children use their ‘Super Six books’ to introduce the children to different historical concepts. Themes and topics covered ensure children start to develop an understanding of past and present in a relatable and age-appropriate way; Nativity story, Comparing contrast stories and characters including figures from the past. All about me, Talk about members of their immediate family and community. Past and present- toys. Study of figures from the past and the impact (Cross curricular links- Links with UTW, David Attenbourgh) Trip to the Church- Term 4 Links to Early Learning Goals Understanding the World ELG: Past and Present Children at the expected level of development will: - Know some similarities and differences between things in the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class; - Understand the past through settings, characters and events encountered in books read in class and storytelling. |

Year 1 |
Term 1- Comparison between old and new, focusing on Trowbridge. Significant changes within Trowbridge, linking with our geography. Vocabulary- old, new, past, future, history, timeline. Term 2- Up, Up and away. Key knowledge:The lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods (for example, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria.)Significant historical events, people, and places in their own locality. The history of flight and how it has changed over time. Amelia Earhart and why she is inspirational. Vocabulary- pilot, flight, inspirational, aviator, aeroplanes, past, present. Term 3- What’s under my feet? Key knowledge: Significant historical events, people, and places in their own locality. Key focus Mary Annings Vocabulary- past, present, fossils, jurassic, palaeontology, significant and change. Term 4- On the sea and under the sea. Key knowledge- Changes within living memory. Key focus- Neil Shakelton, Pirates and Royal ship. Vocabulary: ships, old, new, adventure, expedition, survival, discovery. Term 5: Castles- Castles and Queen Elizabeth. Key knowledge:The lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods (for example, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria.)Significant historical events, people, and places in their own locality. Vocabulary: protect, defend, attack, Drawbridge, tower, thick wall and arrow slits, History, Past, Kings, Queens, Knights, Prince/Princesses Term 6: What a wonderful world! Key focus- David Attenborough. |
